Reel Review: High Ground Will Keep You on the Edge of Your Seat
Paramount’s new action-packed thriller High Ground has just released, and you’re going to want to strap in!
The film tells the story of Jake (Charlie Weber), a small-town sheriff who is forced to protect his town against a dangerous cartel gang that threatens to harm them. After locking up a mysterious prisoner named Nathaniel, Jake discovers that the cartel is not only after Nathaniel, but anyone else who stands in their way. Now it is up to Jake, his girlfriend, Cassie, and his father, Ezra, to save the town and protect their territory.
High Ground gives all the vibes of a western film and even highlights some powerful performances between the leads Charlie Weber, Katherine McNamara (Cassie), Jon Voight (Ezra), and Henry Thomas (Nathaniel). Together, this squad shocks with some incredible fight scenes that definitely had our hearts racing!
Throughout the film, Jake must learn to rely on the people around him and build his trust, one of them being with Cassie. Every western film has a bit of romance, but Cassie’s character serves as so much more than just a simple love interest. Cassie, played by Katherine McNamara, is a head-strong woman and knows when to put people in their place. She also has a perfect aim with her rifle; which comes in handy quite a few times throughout the film! McNamara absolutely crushed this girl-boss role and had us rooting for her with every scene.
Another character with an interesting turn-around is Nathaniel. Appearing to be a criminal in the beginning, we soon come to find there is more to Nathaniel’s story than we had originally thought. As he slowly starts to become part of the solution, we get epic performances between Henry Thomas’s character and Charlie Weber. Together, this dynamic is able to defeat the bad guys in an epic battle.
Every good action movie has a villain we love to hate; and this film is no exception. James Oliver Wheatley plays the cartel leader, Marcus, and executes the character flawlessly with a dark demeanour. His character is pure evil; which is what makes the ending refreshing when he ultimately gets what he deserves!
There are so many twists and turns that made this film feel like a true western. Each actor served to combine action, romance, and even comedy to tell the story. From start to finish, High Ground will blow your mind and leave you completely speechless!
High Ground is available to watch on Paramount+ now!
