Book Changes You Might Have Missed in The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3

The Summer I Turned Pretty premiered last week with its first two episodes of Season 3. While this season creates more drama and chaos for Belly, it also shocked the book readers by offering some new surprises. Here are a few things that changed from the book to the screen this season.

The Time Jump

‘We’ll Always Have Summer’ is the third book in the series written by Jenny Han and follows Belly’s (Lola Tung) summer before starting college her freshman year. While Belly is a freshman in the book, there is a time jump in the show that takes us into Belly’s junior year at Finch. This jump makes sense for both the characters and the actors as we see them mature and grow in their relationships with one another.

Steven’s Car Accident

In the new season, Steven (Sean Kaufman) confesses his feelings for Taylor (Rain Spencer) then moments later crashes his car. His accident leads him to the hospital and further complicates Taylor’s and his relationship. What originally started out as a ‘friends with benefits’ relationship, Taylor now realizes is more serious. While their relationship doesn’t happen in the books, the show makes us root for them as a couple in a messy best friend’s brother trope!

Jeremiah’s ‘Cheating’

Strap in Team Conrad, because Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno) may have lost a few more points. The book showcases Jeremiah’s cheating over Spring Break and the revelation devastates Belly. While the show remains true to this plotline, they also highlight the night as Jeremiah being “drunk and sad” after getting into a fight with Belly and thinking they were on a break (it’s giving Ross and Rachel).

Conrad’s Job

Conrad (Christopher Briney) is distant in both the third book and in Season 3 so far. Being away at Med school, we see Conrad attending therapy to better himself and also apply for a new internship; that he later gets. After receiving a text about Steven and his accident, Conrad is unable to focus on school and gets kicked out of his program the first day of his internship; a change that was made from the book.

The Proposal

The second episode left off with the unexpected proposal between Jeremiah and Belly. While their plans of marriage are brought up in the book, the scene was changed on screen. After Steven’s accident both Belly and Jeremiah end up at the hospital to visit him. Deciding to talk through their feelings, Jeremiah apologizes and begs Belly to take him back. With no hesitation, no ring, and no knee-drop, Jeremiah proposes to Belly who quickly accepts and says yes; a far cry from the book.

After an action packed first two episodes, we can’t wait to see how Belly’s adventures will lead us back to Cousin’s Beach for one last Summer! The Summer I Turned Pretty returns every Wednesday to Prime Video for a weekly release!
