Reel Review: Kissing is the Easy Part is the Perfect Chick Flick for Galentine’s Day
Rom-coms have officially returned, and Tubi is clearly not backing down from the genre. With the release of the beloved QB Bad Boy and Me to How to Lose a Popularity Contest, a new YA romance has just been added to the mix! Tubi’s newest film Kissing is the Easy Part offers even more laughs, love, and a heartfelt message about acceptance.
For Flora’s entire life, she has been taught beauty over brains. Coming from a wealthy family and being the most popular girl in school, from the outside, it seems she has everything she could ever want. It isn’t until she meets Sean, a brainy chemistry geek, that she learns there might be more to herself than what she lets people see. Paris Berelc and Asher Angel star as our ‘opposites attract’ couple, and showcase incredible depth to these characters.
Berelc and Angel have great banter that simply works for the film. Where Berelc portrays the tough exterior of a girl appearing to be unbothered, Angel’s character takes a more analytical approach to life, hiding behind books and equations. The two soon come to learn that a popular girl and a nerdy introvert can actually have a lot in common.
Stripping away the popular and nerdy exteriors of these characters, the film depicts an even deeper message about looking beneath the surface. Flora looks inward and finds that beneath all her makeup, she is a smart and capable girl. Meanwhile, Sean learns that there is more to life than science. The pair help each other to become the best versions of themselves, which after everything they’ve gone through, feels like a reward.
Tubi’s YA romances bring such joy and comfort, and this film isn’t any different. In fact, Kissing is the Easy Part feels superior in its casting, emotional performances, and its overall unique storyline. Everything about the film feels more authentic than some previous YA releases. In good old Tubi fashion, the film is funny, lighthearted, and sends a powerful message about the art of embracing who you are. With a fitting Galentine’s day release, Kissing is the Easy Part is the perfect watch for your next girls night in!
