Reel Talk: Paris Berelc and Asher Angel Talk Rom-Coms and Starring in Tubi’s Kissing is the Easy Part
Tubi’s newest YA rom-com Kissing is the Easy Part releases just in time for Valentine’s Day, and stars Paris Berelc and Asher Angel sat down with Reel Talk & Reviews to discuss the film and their characters!
Paris Berelc stars as Flora, a popular high school student and rebel, who doesn’t play by anyone else's rules. “I’ve definitely felt that pressure of being what everyone else expects of me, so I resonated with Flora in that,” Berelc said about her character. “She also has such a light and excitement for life.” When Flora meets the cute and nerdy Sean, she realizes that there may be more to herself than what others see.
Asher Angel plays Sean, who only cares about internships and science fairs. When Flora’s parents ask Sean to take her out in exchange for a recommendation letter, the last thing he expects is to fall for her. “Us dancing at prom and that moment where Sean really sees Flora, and sees how beautiful she is inside and out, that was a lot of fun,” Angel said about his favorite moment from the film.
Aside from starring in the film, Berelc and Angel also served as executive producers. They touched on the impact that director Fawzia Mirza had on their process. “Fawzia is such a visionary,” Angel said. “It was so collaborative, and I think that’s a big part of why our movie turned out the way it did.”
The film encapsulates a true romantic comedy with all its funny and lighthearted scenes. “It made me so giddy and so excited,” Berelc said about being a part of the project. “I felt like I finally got my dream high school movie.”
The film also includes a deeper message about inner acceptance. Flora and Sean, like most students, find that high school can be a hard time. Leaning on each other, the two learn the importance of owning who you are.
“This film has that feeling of nostalgia,” Angel said. “The movies that we grew up on and the best kinds of rom-coms, it has all those different elements.”
