Reel Review: People We Meet on Vacation Refreshes the Rom-Com Genre
Netflix has started the new year off with a bang with their newest rom-com People We Meet on Vacation!
The new friends-to-lovers romance stars Emily Bader as Poppy, an outgoing free spirit and travel writer. After losing touch with her best friend, Alex (Tom Blyth), the two reunite for a wedding that resparks old feelings and nostalgic memories of their old trips.
From road trips gone wrong to life-altering vacations, Poppy and Alex are together through it all. The chemistry between Bader and Blyth is what makes these characters incredibly dimensional; and the two actors deliver on a perfect balance of romance and comedy!
The film’s way of storytelling is such an important part of the journey as well. Moving back in time, we see Poppy and Alex’s friendship bloom with each vacation taken over the course of 8 years. The time sequence adds even more to the story, allowing the viewers to see Poppy and Alex’s friendship eventually grow into something more.
People We Meet on Vacation feels like the perfect homecoming to the rom-com genre. It was refreshing, comforting, and remained true to the novel by Emily Henry. The film ultimately emphasizes the power of friendship and the importance of finding your way back home.
Poppy and Alex see the best and worst of each other, and accept one another through it all. A true adaptation, People We Meet on Vacation is sure to be your next comfort watch!
