Reel Review: Regretting You Takes You Along All the Stages of Grief
The all new book adaptation Regretting You just hit theaters and offers romance, grief, and an iconic mother-daughter duo!
Based on the bestselling novel by Colleen Hoover, the story follows Morgan and her daughter Clara; as they navigate the sudden loss of Morgan’s husband, Chris (Clara’s father), and her sister, Jenny (Clara’s aunt).
The accident uncovers a secret affair that Chris and Jenny were having and brings Morgan’s feelings for Chris’s best friend (and her sister’s boyfriend), Jonah, to the surface. Meanwhile Clara, in all her young teenage angst, struggles with the loss in her own way; by rebelling against her mother and falling for the one boy she disapproves of, Miller.
The film stars Allison Williams and Dave Franco as Morgan and Jonah. Together, their characters grapple with life, death, and making up for lost time. Williams and Franco convey these emotions through subtle glances and hard conversations that make the viewers feel the depth of their situation.
Mckenna Grace and Mason Thames also star in the film as our young and totally in love couple. Clara and Miller’s connection is instant and the two understand each other in a way they both need from each other. The young actors showcase their talent through both comedic and emotional scenes that are so reminiscent of what it means to fall in love for the first time. And through all the heartache, the two have each other.
Regretting You stays true to the book and serves the story so well; balancing the emotional heartfelt moments with a bit of laughter and comedy. This group of actors also felt like the perfect choice to embody these characters and bring them to life. The hard work of the cast and crew is very evident in every choice of the film; from sets, costumes, and song choices.
Regretting You, to its core, is about a mother and daughter finding their way back to each other. Morgan and Clara find ways to hurt each other as a coping mechanism for the hurt they experienced in loss. The film teaches you that it’s never too late to start over, face your fears, or fall in love.
