Reel Review: Sofia Carson and Corey Mylchreest Embark on a Heartfelt Journey in My Oxford Year

Prepare for yet another emotional story delivered by Sofia Carson, because Netflix’s My Oxford Year will leave your heart in a million pieces.

Based on the novel of the same name, the story follows Anna during her first year at Oxford University. After moving away from her family to London, she finds a new life and love in the form of her literature professor, Jamie (Corey Mylchreest). Together the two embark on a heartfelt journey that ends in a tragic discovery when Anna learns that Jamie is losing a battle to cancer.

Sofia Carson and Corey Mylchreest were the perfect actors to bring Anna and Jamie’s story to life. The chemistry and banter between the two made us fall for their characters quickly and with our whole hearts; which made their fateful ending that much more damaging.

The film, to its core, navigates real world problems and conveys raw themes to its audience. Even in the smaller details, it was quite obvious just how much care went into each decision while making the film. My Oxford Year is so much more than an enemies to lovers cliche; it shows us what it means to truly love with no regrets.

While Anna and Jamie’s time together is cut short, we as viewers learn to cherish their memories over the length of time they did get. This story shows just how one person’s life has the power to impact many. Because of Jamie, Anna learns to live her life to the fullest, not for him, but for herself.

My Oxford Year stresses on the importance of family and sticking around when things get tough. Anna and Jamie help each other through unimaginable circumstances, but they are never truly alone; as their friends and family are there for them both time and time again.

Even the side characters in the film are important to the plot and add the perfect amount of humor and wit. Harry Traveldwyn, Esme Kingdom, and Nikhil Parmer portray a realistic friend group that supports Carson’s character throughout all of the trying times.

Overall, My Oxford Year was a beautiful story with even more inspiring characters. The film combines heartbreak and humor and shows that even the smallest of moments are worth cherishing.

My Oxford Year is available to watch on Netflix now!
