Reel Review: Building the Band is the Ultimate New Reality Music Competition

Get ready for some showstopping performances and memorable music because Building the Band is Netflix’s newest reality TV music competition!

The new series is hosted by Backstreet Boys own AJ McLean and the iconic Nicole Scherzinger. The basis of the show connects musicians to one another in a style similar to The Voice. After blindly hearing each person’s performance, the contestants can either choose to pass or play on the voice they heard and form themselves a band.

The bands range in diversity from boy bands to girl groups and even a mixed group. The series offers high energy performances, emotional conversations, and a ton of unique challenges. Learning and performing a song in less than 24 hours is no easy task, but each person in their respective bands must work together to make their dreams come true.

Each episode in the series offered a ‘showcase’ which was a way to see how these bands and the members grew each week. After each performance, we could really see these members getting closer and building the chemistry needed to take on the stage. Alongside Scherzinger to judge the competition was celebrity and industry professionals Kelly Rowland and the late Liam Payne.

While seeing Payne in one of his last projects was emotional, it was also bittersweet getting to see how much he cared about music and the art of performing. Serving as a mentor to each band, we could tell he saw a bit of himself in each band; especially the boybands Soulidified and Midnight ‘Til Morning.

The talent from each band was unique. Every member and person brought something new to the show and to the group. From sass and spice to soul and groove, each band was a spectacle to see. Though the band we were most rooting for was none other than SZN4.

Ultimately there can only be one winner and the show narrows it down to our final two bands, SZN4 and 3Quency. While SZN4 would have been our ideal pick, it’s clear that Scherzinger, Payne, and Rowland had a tough decision on their hands from all the talent offered in the series.

Overall, the concept of a reality TV music competition series was definitely an intriguing one! The show was new and refreshing with these incredible hosts. Each and every person brought something to the table and made a name for themselves. It was clear that so much love went into each performance and the creations of these bands, and that rewarding feeling can be felt through the screen.

Building the Band is available on Netflix now!
