Reel Review: Almost Popular is the Modern Day Mean Girls
Prepare for teenager drama, because Ruby Rose Turner and Reid Miller are taking us back to high school with their newest film Almost Popular!
Almost Popular follows Susie (Turner) and Bobbie (Miller) in their attempt for popularity. After the epic fail that was their freshman year, the iconic duo is determined to make sophomore year the very best by fulfilling their dream of joining the popular kids; also known as the POP girls.
Together, Susie and Bobbie try to gain the attention of POP girls Vicki (Ellodee Carpenter), Renee (Isabella Ferreira), and Ginger (Victoria Caro). Turner and Miller portray this best friend dynamic by delivering a sibling-like banter with humor, wit, and a ton of humiliating moments throughout the film!
Susie and Bobbie’s attempt for popularity lead to even more troubles for themselves, as the POP girls only mock and ridicule them through a series of social media posts that are seen by the entire school. (Talk about embarrassing)!
The film, as a whole, gives a similar nod to the iconic 2004 film Mean Girls. The diva squad, known as the POP girls, reflect the “Plastics” while Susie and Bobbie’s characters are a clear reflection of Janis and Damian’s relationship. Though the real twist comes in the form of the modern day ‘Cady’ character, Renee.
Isabella Ferreira plays Renee, an original member of the POP girls. While the other girls spend their time causing drama, arguing over clothing, and borderline bully Susie and Bobbie, Renee feels sympathetic for the duo. It doesn’t take her long to ditch the POP girls and join in on Susie and Bobbie’s side; eventually taking them under her wing. While this new squad may not be queen bees, they do find something better; a true friendship.
Almost Popular delivers on its comedy and funny cliches, but it also has a powerful message to back it up. Susie and Bobbie learn the importance of acceptance and that being themselves is always enough. So while the pair may not be social media influencers or become prom king and queen, they do have each other to get them through just about anything.
Almost Popular is in select theaters across the US starting August 27.
