Reel Interview: Ruby Rose Turner and Isabella Ferreira Talk High School Characters in Almost Popular

An all new coming of age comedy has arrived and this time we are going back to high school in Almost Popular! Stars of the film Ruby Rose Turner and Isabella Ferreira sat down with Reel Talk and Reviews to discuss all things high school, cliches, and their own unique characters!

The film follows Susie (Turner) and Bobbie (Reid Miller), sophomores in high school struggling with their popularity (or lack there-of). Always dreaming about being a part of the popular squad, known as the POP girls, Susie soon learns what is really important; friendship.

“It was so charming! It’s one of those classic teen movies and it’s just so funny,” Turner said about the film. “All of the characters are so exaggerated and fun.”

The film follows a modern day Mean Girls plot, with Isabella Ferreira playing a ‘Cady’ inspired character. “I would tell Renee to stand up for herself sooner,” Ferreira said of her character. “A lot of people find themselves in a place with people they are so comfortable with and they miss the red flags.”

Renee soon takes a stand for herself when she ditches the POP girls and befriends Susie and Bobbie, becoming true friends and accepting one another for who they are. Ferreira and Turner talked about how their chemistry and friendship off screen influenced what we see in the film.

“My first day on set was with Ruby and Reid, and they had already been on set and had that banter. Being on set with them and seeing them go at each other was so funny. It made everything feel more real,” Ferreira said.

“We didn’t need any bonding or training, Isabella is my girl and we just had each other’s back. We have one of those relationships where we can pick up with each other right where we left off,” Turner said about Ferreira.

The film showcases a variety of comedic moments from car chases to embarrassing social media posts. When asked about a most memorable scene Ferreira said, “whenever we had to film the montages, I feel like we were all on coo-coo mode and it was so much fun!”

“The pink prom scene was the best time,” Turner added. “We were all there until 3am and had everyone on set.”

With every coming of age film, there is a big revelation and message we are taught. Almost Popular shows the importance of acceptance and embracing who you are. Turner talked about what lesson she learned most from this story.

“Wear it all on your sleeve. It’s better to take that risk than regret never showing that side of yourself. That was the constant reminder I needed when filming, and will always take with me.”

Almost Popular is in select US theaters starting August 27.
